Curated by Justine Kurland, this exhibition brings together 44 artists whose works resonate with Jay DeFeo’s cumulative use of materials, including Wangechi Mutu, Hannah Wilke, Moyra Davey, K8 Hardy, Joiri Minaya, Lee Bontecou, and Ruth Asawa, among others. Conceived by Kurland as an homage to DeFeo’s monumental sculptural painting “The Rose” (1958-66), the works on view together form an exhibition as collage. Francesca’s Woodman’s untitled photograph (c. 1977-78) combines props and people readily available to her — a lush rabbit plant at her family’s home in Antella, Italy and her close friend the artist Sabina Mirri. As Kurland notes, this image was included in one of Woodman’s artist’s books, “Angels, Calendar, Notebook” (c. 1977-78) where she “collaged” her photographs into found notebooks and ledgers, “setting the emotive contortions of her body against the handwriting of strangers.” In her 4Columns review, Sasha Archibald quotes DeFeo on “The Rose” in words that could just as easily articulate Woodman’s approach to her work: “Perfection I have not achieved, but the inevitable form of the idea, yes. Finally.”
